Service and support

Rewritten. Rewritten for this site to reflect eLife Pathways stewardship. Replaces earlier text that is no longer accurate. Rewritten from the archived Costs page. The three service models below are the public position inherited from that page; they do not map onto the internal four-tier entitlement model — see the note at the foot of this page.

Kotahi is open source. You can download it, run it, and modify it, with no licence fees and no lock-in.

Three things come with that, whether or not you ever pay eLife Pathways anything:

  • Influence over the roadmap — through the community, or directly through contributing code.
  • A community of organisations solving similar problems with the same software.
  • Portability — take the software and your content wherever you want, whenever you want.

What costs money is having someone else do the work. There are three ways to arrange that.

You run Kotahi on your own servers or cloud infrastructure.

  • Editorial and publishing specialists help you set up and configure your workflow
  • Technical support to get it running in your environment

Best for teams with their own infrastructure capability who want control over where their data lives.

Managed infrastructure — we run it, you drive it

Section titled “Managed infrastructure — we run it, you drive it”

You configure and run the editorial process. eLife Pathways handles everything underneath it.

  • Management and support of the publishing workflow, website and dissemination
  • Hosted on low-cost shared infrastructure

Best for teams with editorial capacity but no wish to run servers.

Fully managed service — we run all of it

Section titled “Fully managed service — we run all of it”

A single fee for an end-to-end publishing solution.

  • Publish in any model — PRC, preprints, Diamond OA and others
  • Workflow co-designed with eLife Pathways’ publishing specialists
  • Submission, editorial and production services
  • Peer review management
  • Dissemination, plus maintenance and support of your website

Best for communities who want to publish without building a publishing operation.

Entitlements differ between customers, and the detail of what any given organisation receives is set in their agreement rather than on this page. To work out what fits, get in touch.
